An innovative tool to explore/coach mental toughness and resilience and how we as leaders and teams can develop it for competitive advantage
MTQ48 provides feedback on Mental toughness and resilience of individuals. Most psychometrics focus on the measurement of behaviours (how we act) and attributes (how we feel) – mental toughness looks at how we think which is a key driver for the development of behaviour and attributes.
What is MTQ48?
Mental Toughness describes the mindset that every person adopts in everything they do. It is closely related to qualities such as character, resilience, grit, etc. The MTQ48 measures these qualities. Most psychometrics focus on the measurement of behaviours (how we act) and attributes (how we feel) – mental toughness looks at how we think which is a key driver for the development of behaviour and attributes.
The MTQ48 online questionnaire is made up of 48 questions and takes just minutes to complete. Once the online test is complete it generates three in-depth reports:
- The Development Report – aimed at the individual learner completing the questionnaire, this report features a narrative describing their mental toughness and suggestions for how to develop it further.
- The Coaching Report – this report is for the individual’s manager, coach or mentor. It features a narrative on the person completing the questionnaire together with coaching suggestions. It is designed to help managers work more effectively with members of their teams.
- The Assessor Report – this report can be used when selecting individuals for jobs, making other personnel decisions, or as part the employee development/ coaching process. It includes probing questions for supporting the interviews.
Why and when do we use this tool?
The tool is practical, enabling individuals to interpret their resilience profile for action. We have used it when working with senior teams of leaders when certain individual and collective behaviours are seen to be derailing team performance. The tool anchors our work with Senior Leadership Teams on offsite days to ongoing programmes of development. We also use it on selected leadership programmes as part of a broader module focused on health and well-being.
How the tool is applied?
Administered online the reports are generated for individual and collective consumption. They are then incorporated into singular days or as part of wider programme of development. We have used the tools with executive teams undergoing phases of extreme stress, where an objective framework such as the MTQ48 enables the team to share vulnerabilities and a map a way forward together.
