TEAM MOUNTAIN 2006
Mission's Dave Pearce returns to lead a team on Everest in the Spring of 2006.

Dave was the only Brit to summit Everest in 2003. The goal: to ensure a British Expedition honoured this special anniversary – the 50th anniversary of the first ascent – also British.

The Mission: to return friends; to return safely; to return successful.

“Without the team NO-ONE on this expedition would have summitted Everest. It took two years of training and preparation before the team was ready for a 2 month task.”

“A High Performance Team was what I wanted to create. A team whose commitment to the project would be total. A team that comprised a range of skills complementary to the expedition. They didn’t have to be expert climbers. They didn’t have to be athletes. They didn’t need O levels. Their sex was not an issue. I wanted to prove the value of natural ability, common sense, enthusiasm and humility; to produce a corporate identity, build family trust and share the dream. I didn’t want ego-rich glory seekers with private agendas. The competition was to beat the mountain not each other.”

Dave will soon be leading a team of cameramen and women up the West Ridge of Everest in order to film the British Army attempt to climb the mountain via the the tortuous west ridge. Mission Performance will be following Dave and his team as they ascend the mountain, filming the main team.

In developing and leading his team Dave has used, and will be using, key elements of the Leading Self and Others curriculum LSO©

You can follow their progress via weekly updates on the website.

You can also take a closer a look at the team's efforts to achieve CCI (Clarity Cutlure and Interdependence) - Mission Performance’s model of high performance teamwork - for the team on the mountain as details of the their team charter, roles and working relationships will be available for you to read on the site.
Clarity
PCI FITCH has been tasked to produce a quality documentary about an expedition led by the British Army to attempt the West Ridge of Everest (EWR). If successful, this will be a first British ascent and one of only a handful of ascents by this extremely difficult route. PCI FITCH has employed eight individuals to accompany the EWR Expedition and capture the Expedition on film and other means. They shall be called TEAM FITCH.
Purpose
To safely gather quality film footage in order to produce a cutting edge documentary.

To come back alive and uninjured.

To come back friends.
Culture
OUR VALUES AND ETHOS may include:
- To work effectively as a team and allow the Main Everest West Ridge Team to operate with minimal distraction. To allow the Main Team to remain focused on their tasks: this will help us achieve our mission.
- To have open communication at all levels with all teams: this will allow clarity of purpose and knowledge.
- To have fun.
- To be open to the needs of others. (We are all different and can be motivated in various ways.)
- Having mutual respect and support.
- Our approach to dealing with conflict: be sympathetic to the beliefs and values of others.
- Having no hidden agendas.
- Being task focused.
- Partying: Where possible and not to detract or hinder the mission let's party! For those who have not experienced the delights of Kathmandu: you are in for a treat. It is an explosion of colour, generosity, fun and the most wonderful people you could hope to meet.
“We should feel privileged to be part of history and be in the magical presence of this great mountain. We should make the most of it, be completely task focused, and appreciate the positions we have been afforded. We are fortunate to be with a group of fine, diverse and motivated individuals. Lets use this to our advantage and come back with new and lasting friendships”

Interdependence and Clarity of Role

TEAM FITCH on the Mountain
NOH will be the overall producer and lead on all issues regarding production, administration and control of budgets. She will be the rear-link to TEAM FITCH whilst they are on location for all matters including welfare. NOH is the interface and link between the leader of EWR, Head of Army Recruiting and PCI FITCH.

SF is the main point of contact on all issues regarding finance. She is there in direct support to NOH and fills this post when NOH is absent.

DP will offer direct technical and mountaineering support to DR in order for him to achieve his mission as DoP. DP will assume the role as TEAM FITCH leader and as the interface between the EWR Team and TEAM FITCH. Where practical, all issues on equipment, mountain movement, logistics and team issues generally should, in the first instance, be directed through DP. This also applies to the EWR Team on issues regarding the interaction of teams.
RD will remain at Base camp (BC) and lead on all issues regarding the direction of the documentary. NG will remain at BC and lead on all matters regarding the editorial.

LS will offer direct technical and mountaineering support to GC in order for him to achieve his mission as DoP for the Development Team (DT). LS will assume the role as leader and as the interface between the DT and TEAM FITCH. Where practical, all issues on equipment, mountain movement, logistics and team issues generally should, in the first instance, be directed through LS. This also applies to the DT on issues regarding the interaction of teams.

SA and CP will follow the itinerary set out for the Junior Team (JT). SA will assume the role as leader and as the interface between the JT and TEAM FITCH. Where practical, all issues on equipment, mountain movement, logistics and team issues generally should, in the first instance, be directed through SA. This also applies to the JT on issues regarding the interaction of teams.

KJ will offer direct technical and mountaineering support to SA&CP in order for them to achieve their mission as D’soP for the Junior Team(JT). KJ will assume the role as leader and as the interface between the JT and TEAM FITCH. Where practical, all issues on equipment, mountain movement, logistics and team issues generally should, in the first instance, be directed through KJ. This also applies to the JT on issues regarding the interaction of teams.

Throughout the expedition, the overall command and final decision on any issues, should it be necessary, will be with the Team Leader of the MT, DT or JT respectively and in the first instance, or their second in command should the leader be absent or unable to command.

Expedition Data

Dave will be supporting the main Army Expedition. An overview is given below; the official web site explains the challenge in more detail.

The expedition will be raising money for a number of charities and you are strongly encouraged to contribute in some way.
The Mission
“The mission is to climb Everest by the infamous West Ridge, one of the mountain's most difficult and dangerous routes, and one that has never before been successfully completed by the British. The West Ridge is a steep and narrow ridge of rock that runs along the right-hand shoulder of Everest when viewed from Tibet. Climbers are exposed to freezing high winds for the entire route and, with vertical drops on either side, there is absolutely no room for error.

The risk of avalanche, coupled with its steepness, means that the West Ridge remains one of Everest's hardest routes. Of the estimated 2,249 people to have climbed the mountain since it was first conquered, only 13 have done so via the West Ridge. None of these were British.”
The Plan
Everest will be climbed in stages over several weeks. The expedition starts at Base Camp at the foot of the mountain, and moves through five camps progressively higher up the mountain, with the lowest at 6,000m above sea level, and the highest 800m below the summit. As stores and equipment are moved up the mountain, each of the camps will become smaller, forming a pyramid of support which will create a springboard for the final summit attempt.
Success in 2006 will earn the members of the Everest West Ridge Expedition a place in mountaineering history as the first British team to climb the world's highest peak by this incredible route.

Climbing Everest by the West Ridge will be one of the greatest achievements in the lives of everybody involved with the expedition. It will confirm that the Army, and Britain itself, can still produce world-class mountaineers.
