“A High Performance Team was what I wanted to create. A team whose commitment to the project would be total. A team that comprised a range of skills complementary to the expedition. They didn’t have to be expert climbers. They didn’t have to be athletes. They didn’t need O levels. Their sex was not an issue. I wanted to prove the value of natural ability, common sense, enthusiasm and humility; to produce a corporate identity, build family trust and share the dream. I didn’t want ego-rich glory seekers with private agendas. The competition was to beat the mountain not each other.”

Dave Pearce
Mission Performance Consultant and Speaker
Dave was the only Brit to summit Everest in 2003. The goal: to ensure a British Expedition honoured this special anniversary – the 50th anniversary of the first ascent – also British. The Mission: to return friends; to return safely; to return successful.
Without the team NO-ONE on this expedition would have summitted Everest. It took two years of training and preparation before the team was ready for a 2 month task.
Chennai a success on many fronts
Working with one of RBS’s most senior team’s mission delivered a CSR programme to be remembered for many reasons. From the smiles on the faces of the pupils from St Louis school to the embraces and sense of achievement experienced by the RBS team. This was the hardest team programme Mission has ever delivered; building a dome in 38 degrees of heat, in a location thousands of miles from home, with teams flown in from 4 continents.
Kinley and his team from Kathmandu flew south to supervise the build and stayed on to finish off the dome.
The first half day introduced the team to Mission’s model of high performance team work and Rob facilitated the team to focus on their culture...

Mission Performance set for another year of global delivery with Schlumberger
Over the last 2 years the Mission team has developed a strong relationship with Schlumberger SIS delivering a leadership toolbox workshop as part of their First Line Managers’ programme, every six weeks at different locations globally. This year we are set to continue with the confirmation of multiple programmes delivered across the globe.
The Mission delivery team will be traveling to Rio de Janeiro, Milan, Cape Town, Kuala Lumpur, Mexico, Dubai, Siberia and Paris to deliver elements of our high impact portfolio. We are delighted that our relationship with Schlumberger continues to grow from strength to strength.
Successful Kuala Lumpur delivery for Schlumberger
Deborah Fleming and Julia Carden have just returned from Kuala Lumpur where they were working with 17 delegates from the Schlumberger SIS team, who were attending phase 2 of the Schlumberger Sales University. The objective was to run a development centre, providing individual feedback and coaching to the delegates and to identify high level development needs, all assessed against Schlumberger’s competency framework.

The perceived value of the support from the Mission Performance development centre was:
• The promotion of a structured approach and development culture for Schlumberger.
• Tailored and focussed feedback on strengths and weaknesses for the individuals with a professional coach.
• Unbiased approach from an external organisation.
• Accommodation and appreciation of the different cultures.
All the delegates responded positively to the exercises and welcomed the opportunity for individual coaching.

Both Deborah and Julia enjoyed designing and running this programme and are looking forward to repeating it later in the year.

Buro Four - Raising employee engagement
Mission Performance have been working with Buro Four (www.burofour.co.uk) for the last 3 years delivering a range of soft skill workshops across the organisation at levels; from leadership and talent management to personal effectiveness. In this time the business has been surveyed at regular intervals to measure the engagement and opinions of all employees in the business. This survey has always received a near 100% response rate. Training and Development within the survey was measured in terms of quality and effectiveness over this period. Mission Performance and its partner human resource team in Buro Four have combined to raise engagement and training effectiveness by 26% over the period.
Mission provides the ‘firm hand’ to the law
Recent research published in Legal Business November 2007 suggests that many legal firms are happy to accept percentage attrition rates in the mid to high 20’s amongst their assistant populations. This churn of talent can be very expensive, with conservative estimates, placing the direct costs alone at one year’s salary.
This “as is” situation is no longer acceptable for many progressive firms, especially when the solutions are relatively inexpensive and easy to execute.
Legal Business goes on to quote two assistants:
“Attrition is entirely dependant on culture and management, Firms should think about changing this if it is a problem for them”. Travers Smith, male Senior Assistant – Legal Business November 2007.
“In my experience, if people are generally happy where they work and feel the firm has the right culture, then they are not particuarly likey to move”. Jones Day, female 2-4PQE – Legal Business November 2007.
Mission have been engaged by some of the most progressive firms to address this churn rate through a combination of team, leadership, coaching and talent mangement programmes. Mission will be bringing its experience with some of the worlds largest and most progressive corporate organisations to the legal market.
Above all assistants want challenging work, but they also want to know they are valued within their firm.
Can you afford to live with it?

The Fear of Networking
So who would you most like to meet? Anyone in the world, obviously alive, and it could be for whatever reason. That is the question asked and it is amazing the responses that arise. However given a room of middle managers from a large city institution it is remarkable and at times even surprising how easy it is to get in contact with that person. Big deal. So why is it that this networking opportunity has to be dragged out by a facilitator? The connections are all there they just need wiring up. Stanley Milgram introduced his much maligned concept of 6 degrees of separation many years ago but it always seems to work, that is, if you work at it a little... click here to read the rest of this article

Mission are set to deliver leadership in Siberia for Schlumberger. Mission Performance’s Multiple Programme Delivery for Schlumberger Kicks Off

Mission’s multiple delivery of Schlumberger’s programmes kicked off in May with Richard Tarran and Clive Cosby heading off to Rio to continue running the successful 1 day leadership programme for the SIS team. This month saw Clive and Rob Lewis down in Cape Town again delivering the leadership programme to another SIS group there, whilst Richard and Chris Mcleod headed out to Tyumen in Siberia to deliver for Schlumberger Integrated Project Management (IPM).
Richard and Chris completed two separate programmes for IPM which is a rapidly expanding sector for Schlumberger. The first programme was the tried and tested Leadership Toolbox for front line managers where the group was a typically multinational group from various parts of the Russian IPM operation but also from as far as away as Mexico and Houston. The second programme was a Team Development day for the NEFTRACK Team based in Siberia. Again, it was for a multinational team made up of technical experts and drilling Side Track managers. Their task was to facilitate a common mission, a set of behavioural values to support this mission and to construct a communications plan that would be routinely tested by the nature of the operations in Siberia and the significant challenges of growth year on year.
Feedback has been excellent and therefore Mission will be delivering more of these programmes throughout the summer in Kuala Lumpur, Milan and the UK with an additional programme in Kuala Lumpur assessing the SIS Sales Team there.
Mission’s African Shell contract is successfully completed and rated ‘Best Ever Shell Product’
The Mission Nigeria contract, which was delivered in partnership with Shell Global Solutions is now complete and deemed to be an overwhelming success. Mission partnered with the Shell Global Solutions team to design and deliver a Transformational Leadership and Change Programme. A large Mission team then joined with Shell to deliver the programme to 240 African oil industry middle managers across Nigeria in seriously challenging circumstances.
Post programme feedback consistently rated delivery and content as 4.5 out of a possible 5 and it became widely referred to as “the best Shell product” the managers had ever experienced.
Christiaan Mcleod, Mission Director and programme manager said; “I’m tremendously proud to have been part of this African Adventure and on a serious note I would challenge any other Training and Development Consultancy to achieve better results in Nigeria under similarly testing circumstances”.
The Shell Global Solutions programme manager recommends Mission unreservedly to any other international organisation working in developing nations.

Taking teams more seriously - Mission MBTI open programmes to be launched
Mission Performance will soon launch three open MBTI programmes for accredited practitioners designed to help bridge the gap between ‘one on one’ coaching to whole team delivery. Traditionally delivering MBTI to whole teams has been very difficult. The gap between effective delivery between ‘one on one’ delivery and whole team engagement has been vast. Existing programmes treat all teams as being the same in terms of stage of life or business context, Mission approach it differently. We start with the proverbial ‘end in mind’ and begin by tailoring programmes to 3 specific team scenarios which are more relevant for the accredited trainer and the client team’s objective. Deborah Fleming will be working with Mission to deliver these programmes from the spring 08. For further information please click here.
Mission to Deliver Team Development with CSR for an International Bank
Mission is preparing, with its charity partner Pegasus, to deliver a team development programme in India for an international bank. The programme will take place in July on the east coast in Chennai (formerly Madras) and will see the teams working with their chosen charity to build a permanent dome for the benefit of the disadvantaged local community.
Rob Lewis (Mission) and Simon McCarty (Pegasus) will be leading the project and working with their in country team based in Kathmandu. This in country team will be on site for a few days before the programme to prepare the site and to arrange for the local building materials to be delivered.
Working with our international partners Mission has the capability to deliver programmes of this type; CSR and remote global team development is an exciting area and one in which Mission excels.
More great feedback for Mission Director Christiaan Mcleod for his Polar Speech.
Mission Director Christiaan Mcleod was the key note speaker at SSI's Annual Customer Conference this week.
The presentation covered Chris's account of the Polar Challenge Race to the Magnetic North Pole and aimed to highlight team work and leadership lessons under pressure to an audience of over 100 of SSI's key clients.

"I would just like to say how much I enjoyed your account of your team's race to the magnetic north pole. The underlying message about generating team spirit and achieving high performance was very clear. Judging by the comments and emails I am receiving, everyone is in full agreement it was an amazing adventure, and told superbly. Many thanks for helping us to close our conference on such a high note."
