Associate Director, Leadership Development - lately Director, Business and Operations, Leadership Foundation for Higher Education (four years). A member of the UK Senior Civil Service – formerly Deputy Director, Cabinet Office Corporate Development Group (Corporate HR for UK Civil Service), and Director of the Leadership and Management Development Group, National School of Government for ten years.

From a working lifetime in technical and operational management and leadership in the UK Civil Service – firstly with Social Security local, regional and national operations; and then from 1990 with Civil Service College, Cabinet Office Corporate Development and latterly in setting up the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education as a self-sustaining entity – Martin has retained a strong interest in governance; organisational development; leadership and management development.

After a period in large systems development audit in state benefits delivery, he joined the business efficiency team at the Civil Service College before moving on to head the Training for Trainers business area.

Appointed to the Civil Service College Board in 1993 - he was Business Director of the Management and Organisational Development Group in its various iterations through to 2004. He also undertook Board responsibility as Marketing Director 1995 – 1997 and as HR Director for the Agency from 1997 – 2001.

In parallel - as a hands on contributor to consultancy assignments at home and abroad – he has undertaken capacity building projects in destinations as diverse as Bogota, Colombia; Amman, Jordan; Jayapura, Irian Jaya - and in Europe, South Africa and South East Asia - including directing a long term institutional strengthening project in Indonesia. Most recently he has been working in The Gulf with the National School of Government’s Top Management Programme and the Governance Project (Effectiveness of Executive Committees) – in close partnership with the Government of Abu Dhabi.

He is a regular platform speaker and event facilitator on many aspects of Leadership Development, at all levels, in Higher Education and across the public service. He has a keen interest in the governance, efficiency and public service reform agenda. He is committed to development and delivery of the range of programmes, products and services which will support strong leadership in the University sector - and in joining up the leadership community across the spectrum of public service delivery. A coach and mentor, he retains Membership of Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and the Institute of Internal Auditors – amongst other professional links. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
