In 2004, Justin Featherstone commanded Y Company of the 1st Battalion The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment in Al Amarah, Southern Iraq. During this tour, attacks against British forces in the area increases by over one thousand percent, as the Medhi Army uprising took root. His company fought for sixteen weeks, culminating in a three week defence of CIMIC House, their isolated compound in the centre of the city. Nicknamed ‘Rorke’s Drift and ‘The Alamo’, their Battle Group became the most attacked unit since the Korean War and their tale has been told in Dusty Warriors, Sniper One and In Foreign Fields. Despite being vastly outnumbered by enemy forces, Y Company successfully defended their location, despite being attacked over one hundred times and receiving over six hundred mortar rounds and rockets in twenty three days alone. Although given the option of withdrawing, his company refused, winning a fragile ceasefire for the last weeks of their tour. Employing lateral thought, he created a micro-economic regeneration scheme that resulted in his Battalion being nominated for the Wilkinson Sword of Peace. Justin uses the backdrop of this extreme environment, along with his expedition experiences, to draw out transferrable lessons on building trust and teams; operating in multi-cultural environments and maintaining morale and high performance. It is an exhilarating, inspiring and historic story that focuses on emotional intelligence, lateral thought and how to get the very best from teams in the most difficult of circumstances. Above all, Justin focuses on the importance of inculcating a values-based ethos in any organisation and how such an approach delivers innovation, sustainability and cohesion in all arenas from Public Sector, through sport to commerce. Background - Justin Featherstone served for eighteen years in the Army, principally with The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, leaving as a Major in 2007. He commanded soldiers on operations in Northern Ireland, Congo, Kosovo and Iraq and taught Naval Officer cadets at the Britannia Royal Naval College, as a Captain. In his final two years, he was the head of leadership at the Royal Military academy Sandhurst. Always passionate about the outdoors, he has participated in, and led, over twenty military and civilian overseas expeditions to the mountains, rainforest and whitewater rivers of the world. Now a freelance leadership and expedition consultant, he has delivered leadership and teamwork training to a variety of Public Sector and corporate organisations. He combines this thread with television and radio presenting. He is an occasional reporter for BBC South West and has contributed to a number of documentaries for both radio and television. Most recently, he presented a programme on the Military Covenant, for Politics UK, which aired on the BBC World Service in December 2008. Justin was awarded the Military Cross for his actions in Iraq; is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society; an Accredited Practitioner of the Institute for Outdoor Learning; an Affiliate for the Centre of Leadership Studies at Exeter University and is a qualified Winter Mountain Leader and whitewater kayaking instructor. |
